Age of Wonders 4 Beginner Guide — Decide Affinity First

Age of Wonders 4 opens with a faction creator that looks like a costume box and behaves like a build planner. The decision that matters most is invisible at that screen — which affinity you are committing to — and everything else should follow from it. This guide puts the opening in order: the four faction decisions, what the tome gates cost, and the habits that separate a smooth first fifty turns from a stalled one.

Age of Wonders 4 Best Builds — Three Factions, Ranked

A faction in Age of Wonders 4 is four decisions — form, culture, two society traits and a tome line — and they are only strong when they agree with each other. The thing that makes them agree is affinity. These are three complete factions built that way, ranked, with the exact society traits and the first four tomes for each. Then the rule underneath all of them, and the one build where it does not apply.

Age of Wonders 4 Best Culture — All 11 Ranked

Culture rankings for Age of Wonders 4 usually compare units. Units matter, but they are not what separates the cultures over a whole game — affinity points are, because the tome tiers you can research are gated behind them. A culture that puts 2 points into one affinity starts materially closer to tier IV than one that splits 1 and 1. This ranks all 11 on that basis, then covers what each actually plays like.

Age of Wonders 4 Tomes — Which to Take, and in What Order

Tomes look like a menu of spells. They are actually a commitment device: tier III, IV and V are gated behind affinity points, and spell research cost escalates with the number of tomes you have already taken. Those two rules together mean the order you take tomes in matters more than which ones you take. This covers the gates, the cost curve, the six affinities and how to plan a line that actually reaches tier V.

Overview

What's the Game?

A fantasy 4X where you design the faction rather than choose one. Form, culture, two society traits and a researched line of tomes combine into empires that genuinely play differently — and the affinity rules deciding whether yours works are never shown where you build it.

You design the faction

a physical form, one of 11 cultures, two society traits and a line of tomes researched over the game, combining into empires that are not the same game with different art.

Affinity is the hidden constraint

tier III, IV and V tomes require 3, 6 and 8 points in an affinity, and only one tier V tome can be unlocked per game.

Tactical combat is a real second game

hex battles fought out rather than resolved by stack comparison.

Seven cultures have sub-cultures

Dark cults, Feudal authorities, Mystic schools, Reaver governments, Primal totems, Oathsworn oaths and Nomad traditions, all chosen at faction creation.

Generated realms with traits

Unbound Tomes removes the affinity requirements outright, which turns the central constraint off for that match.

Honest caveats

the rules that decide whether a faction works are invisible at the screen where you build it, and the most flexible culture arrived in a DLC.

FAQ

FAQ

A fantasy 4X with a full tactical hex combat layer, made by Triumph Studios and published by Paradox Interactive in May 2023. Its distinguishing feature is that you design the faction rather than picking one — a physical form, a culture, two society traits and a line of tomes you research over the game. It sits at around 81 percent positive on Steam from roughly 23,000 reviews.
That tome tiers are gated on affinity points. A tier III tome requires 4 tomes and 3 points in that affinity, tier IV requires 6 tomes and 6 points, and tier V requires 8 tomes and 8 points — with only one tier V unlockable per game. Your 6 starting points come from your culture (1 or 2) and your two society traits (2 each), and nothing at faction creation says so.
Architect if you have it, because its 2 points go into an affinity you choose rather than a fixed one. Among fixed cultures, High (2 Order) and Industrious (2 Materium) are the strongest starts, since two points in one affinity puts you a full tome closer to tier IV. Barbarian is the only culture that splits its points, at 1 Chaos and 1 Nature.
Decide the affinity first, then let it choose the culture and both society traits. Aligning all three puts your whole 6 starting points in one affinity, which is the tier IV gate before you have researched anything. The one exception is Empire of the Cosmos, which removes the affinity requirements at 1, 2 and 3 points of every affinity and rewards spreading instead.
The interface does, alongside Russian, Simplified Chinese, Korean, French, German, Spanish and Polish. There is no localised voice acting — full audio is English only — and nine languages are supported in total, which is narrower than many Paradox titles.
