Mutant Year Zero Beginner Guide — Read Prices First

Mutant Year Zero hands you two mutants, a real-time stealth phase and a mutation screen it barely explains. First runs tend to come apart in the same two places — points spent without noticing that prices differ per character, and stealth phases that try to clear more than silenced weapons can. Here is the opening in order: what to check before spending anything, what the stealth phase is actually for, and which choices stick.

Mutant Year Zero Characters — Who To Bring and Why

Mutant Year Zero gives you six characters and lets you field three. Comparing their stats to choose is close to pointless — everyone has 12 movement, 0 armour and 10 throw range, and health is either 8 or 6. The real differences are in pricing. Each character buys the same shared mutations at their own rate, and with only one Minor, one Major and one Passive equipped at a time, those prices decide roles far more firmly than the stat sheet does.

Mutant Year Zero Mutations Tier List — Price Decides

Mutant Year Zero prices mutations per character, and it never tells you. Skull Splitter costs Dux 1 point and Magnus 9. Silent Assassin costs Farrow 5 and Magnus 11. The effect is identical; the bill is not. Because you can only equip one Minor, one Major and one Passive at a time, what you can buy cheaply decides your squad far more than what is theoretically strongest.

Mutant Year Zero Stealth Guide — Only Three Silent Guns

Mutant Year Zero asks you to thin a camp out before the fight starts. What it does not tell you is how hard a ceiling it puts on that: the base game ships exactly three silenced weapons, and all three deal 4 damage. So your stealth phase is not limited by patience or positioning. It is limited by how many enemies have 4 or less effective health, and by critical chance — which is why Silent Assassin and the choice between crossbow and pistol matter more than they look.

Overview

What's the Game?

A turn-based tactics game with the best opening move in the genre. You approach in real time, split the patrol, remove the stragglers silently, and start the fight you chose — and then find the silenced weapons never deal more than 4.

A real-time approach phase

scout the camp with lamps off, split the squad, read the patrol routes and pick the moment combat begins.

Silenced weapons cap the stealth layer

the base game has three of them and all three deal 4 damage, so the phase removes stragglers rather than camps.

Mutations are priced per character

Skull Splitter costs Dux 1 point and Magnus 9 for the same effect, and the interface never says so.

Three equipped mutations

one Minor, one Major and one Passive, which makes breadth worth more than a single expensive pick.

Recharge is paid in kills

not turns, so stealth kills before a fight pay for the abilities used inside it.

Honest caveats

the stealth layer stops scaling well before the campaign ends, and the six characters are nearly identical on paper.

FAQ

FAQ

A turn-based tactics campaign with a real-time stealth approach phase, made by The Bearded Ladies and published by Funcom in December 2018. What separates it from its peers is that you scout a camp in real time and choose when the fight starts, rather than having the enemy patrol decide for you. It sits at around 90 percent positive on Steam from roughly 20,500 reviews.
That mutations are priced per character. Skull Splitter costs Dux 1 point and Magnus 9 for exactly the same effect; Silent Assassin costs Farrow 5 and Magnus 11. Since you can only equip one Minor, one Major and one Passive at a time, those prices decide your squad far more than raw power does, and nothing in the interface flags it.
Less than it looks. The base game contains exactly three silenced weapons — the Ancient Pistol, the Crossbow and the MIMIR Needle Pistol — and all three deal 4 damage with 10 range. That fixed number, not your positioning, decides how much of a camp you can clear. The DLC Wraith deals 7 with 14 range and roughly doubles the ceiling.
Statistically almost identical. Every character has 12 movement, 0 armour and 10 throw range, and health is either 8 for Bormin and Farrow or 6 for Dux, Selma and Magnus. That is the entire stat difference. What actually separates them is which mutations they can buy cheaply.
Yes, at interface, full audio and subtitle level, as do Russian, Simplified Chinese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Brazilian Portuguese. Full voice localisation across eleven languages is unusual at this budget, and it matters here because the writing and the banter are a real part of the appeal.
