For The King Beginner Guide — Focus Is the Whole Game

For The King hands you three adventurers, a hex map and seven stats, and most first runs end because the party spent its certainty in a dungeon and met a boss with nothing left. The fix is one habit and one town service. Here is the opening in order — what Focus is, who to bring, and the decisions that are permanent.

For The King Class Tier List — All Thirteen Ranked

For The King has thirteen playable characters and the usual way to compare them is Strength against Intelligence. That misses the stat that actually decides adventures. Focus is the currency that guarantees rolls, and it ranges from 2 to 4 across the roster while everything else moves in tens. Two characters also manufacture more of it. Meanwhile Luck is 50 on every single character, and Luck is the one roll Focus can never touch.

For The King Focus Guide — One Currency Runs Everything

For The King looks like a dice game with seven stats. In practice one resource decides almost everything: Focus, which converts a random roll into a guaranteed one. It pays for combat, movement, lockpicking and trap evasion out of the same pool, capped at nine. And there is exactly one thing it cannot buy, which is why that thing is the game's real difficulty.

For The King Party Guide — Three Slots, One Budget

Party advice for For The King usually copies role-based games — a tank, a healer, a damage dealer. That framing is close enough to work on Apprentice and wrong enough to lose on Master. Your party is three separate Focus pools that all pay into one adventure. The compositions that succeed are the ones that either generate Focus or stop spending it, not the ones that tick role boxes.

Overview

What's the Game?

A turn-based adventure on a board of hexes where one currency, Focus, buys certainty on any roll you care about — and pays for combat, chests, traps and travel out of the same pool of nine.

Focus buys certainty

spend a point and a roll slot becomes a guaranteed success, and spending more raises the accuracy of the rest of that action.

One pool pays for everything

attacks, fleeing, defending, chest locks, trap evasion and conversion into overworld movement, all capped at nine.

Two characters generate it

the Scholar's Refocus and the Monk's Discipline are the only skills that give Focus back each turn.

Luck is the exception

it can never be focused, and it is exactly 50 on all thirteen characters.

Co-op for three

online and local, and the game is clearly built around arguing over when to spend.

Honest caveats

an adventure runs for hours and permadeath is total, and the jump from Apprentice to Journeyman is steeper than it looks.

FAQ

FAQ

A turn-based adventure played on a board of hexes with a party of up to three, permadeath across a whole run, and Lore unlocks between runs. It was made by IronOak Games and published by Curve Games in April 2018, supports online and local co-op for three players, and sits at around 88 percent positive on Steam from roughly 43,800 reviews.
That Focus is the only resource that matters and that everything competes for it. Focus turns a chance roll into a guaranteed one, and the same pool — capped at nine — pays for attacks, fleeing, defending, opening chests, evading traps and converting into overworld movement. Most losing runs are runs that emptied the pool on chests before the fight that mattered.
The Scholar. It costs 0 Lore, starts with Focus 4 where most of the roster has 3, and its Refocus skill gives a chance to regain a point at the end of each turn. Only two characters in the game generate Focus rather than merely spending it — the Scholar and the Monk, whose Discipline works the same way.
No, and unusually definitively. All thirteen characters have Luck of exactly 50, the only stat identical across the whole roster, and Luck rolls are the one type that can never be focused under any circumstances. It is the single part of the game nobody can influence.
Yes, at interface, full audio and subtitle level, as do Russian, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Brazilian Portuguese. Twelve languages with full voice acting is generous for a game this size.
