DRG Survivor Beginner Guide — What to Unlock First and Why

Author: Verdict Games Editorial Team Last Updated:

The Bottom Line

Mine constantly — ore buys the upgrades that decide the next stage, so a dive where you only shot things is a dive you underfunded. Push player rank to 5 for the Engineer and then grind Engineer to rank 9 for Tinkerer, which is the strongest general-purpose class mod. Stay on Hazard 1 and 2 only long enough to earn Biome Points, because the unlocks, not the difficulty, are what actually make you stronger.

Summary

Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor looks like a survivor-like with a mining button, and the mining button is the part people underestimate. Ore is the currency that buys your upgrades between stages, so how much you dig decides how strong you are on the stage after this one. This guide covers the opening hours in the order they matter: how a dive is structured, which classes to unlock first, and how biomes and hazard levels gate your progress.

Who This Is For: New Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor players in their first hours Beginner-friendly

Key Points

Key Points

1

Mining is the economy, not a side activity — ore pays for the between-stage shop, so digging while you fight is how you fund the next stage.

2

Classes unlock by player rank: Gunner at 3, Engineer at 5, Driller at 7, Demolisher at 9. Engineer is the one to chase because it leads to Tinkerer.

3

A standard dive is five stages. Biome Masteries are ten-stage versions of the same thing.

4

Hazard levels unlock with Biome Points, earned by completing the challenge shown when you pick a hazard level — so playing low hazard still advances you.

5

There are five biomes plus Glacial Strata, and each has its own environmental hazard, from Magma Core's exploding plants to Azure Weald's healing crystals.

Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor is an auto-shooter, which means your weapons fire on their own and the only things you actually control are where you stand and what you buy. That second half is where new players lose dives, because the game never sits you down and explains that the rock is your bank.

This guide goes through the opening hours in the order they matter.

What to do first — ranked

Order Do this Why it is this high
1 **Mine while you fight** Ore is the currency for the between-stage shop. Your guns fire automatically, so walking toward a vein costs you nothing. A dive where you only shot things is a dive you underfunded, and stage four is where you find out.
2 **Push player rank to 5 and unlock the Engineer** Not for its starting mod, but because Engineer rank 9 gives Tinkerer — weapons start at level 3 with plus 10 percent XP, which reaches overclock breakpoints earlier for the rest of your account's life.
3 **Push one weapon, do not spread purchases** Overclocks arrive at weapon level 6, 12 and 18. Three half-levelled weapons reach none of those. One weapon at level 12 with a chosen overclock beats three at level 5.
4 **Farm Biome Points on low hazard** Hazard levels unlock with Biome Points, which come from completing the challenge shown when you pick a hazard. Low hazard still progresses you, so there is no reason to fight a difficulty you are losing to.
5 **Learn one biome before adding another** Each biome has its own environmental hazard. Knowing that Magma Core's plants explode when you get near them is worth more than any upgrade you could have bought instead.

Mining is the economy

The single biggest adjustment from other survivor-likes is that the terrain is not scenery. You mine ore during a stage, and between stages you spend it in a shop on weapon upgrades. Nitra in particular is what buys those upgrades.

This changes how you move. In most games of this genre you route around the map to stay alive and collect experience gems. Here you route to stay alive, collect gems and carve through the rock you pass, because the third one is what determines whether the shop screen is a real choice or a formality.

If the shop between stages ever feels like it has nothing you can afford, that is not bad luck — that is a mining problem from the stage before. Build the habit of drifting toward ore whenever nothing is immediately trying to kill you.

How a dive is structured

A standard dive is five stages. You pick a biome, pick a hazard level within it, and work through the stages with the shop appearing between them.

There are also Masteries, which are variations on the same loop:

  • Weapon Masteries are short three-stage dives using a single weapon.
  • Class Mod Masteries focus a dive on one class mod.
  • Biome Masteries are the long version — ten stages instead of five, with otherwise normal rules.

Masteries are not a shortcut to power. If a five-stage dive is already ending early, a ten-stage one will end early too. Go back to the standard loop and work on funding.

Classes and the unlock order that matters

Classes unlock by player rank:

Class Unlocks at Default class mod Worth chasing?
Scout Available from the start Classic It is what you have — fine to learn on
Gunner Player rank 3 Weapons Specialist Yes, eventually — Gunner rank 9 gives Juggernaut, the survivability answer
Engineer Player rank 5 Maintenance Worker **Yes, first** — Engineer rank 9 gives Tinkerer
Driller Player rank 7 Foreman Situational — Interrogator needs a committed fire and acid build
Demolisher Player rank 9 Contractor Yes — every Demolisher mod carries plus 5 life regen

The important detail is that class mods unlock at that class's own rank, not your overall player rank. Reaching player rank 9 does not hand you Tinkerer; diving as the Engineer until the Engineer hits rank 9 does. So once you unlock the Engineer, stay on it for a while rather than trying every dwarf once.

For the full ranking and what each mod actually does, see the DRG Survivor class mods tier list.

Biomes and hazard levels

There are five main biomes plus Glacial Strata, each with five hazard levels.

Biome What it throws at you
Crystalline Caverns Unlocked by default. Purple mineable terrain and crystal structures, and the tamest environment to learn in
Magma Core Lava vents, and plants that explode when you get close
Hollow Bough Regenerating brown vines, and red vines that damage you
Salt Pits Terrain that is easier to mine, but red crystal clusters that bring stalactites down on you
Azure Weald Wet and lush, with jump pads and healing crystals — the one biome that gives something back
Glacial Strata Frozen caves with smooth ice that changes how your dwarf moves

Hazard levels are unlocked with Biome Points, earned by completing the challenge displayed when you select a hazard level. The costs escalate steeply — in Magma Core, Hazard 2 needs 9 points while Hazard 5 needs 39 — so most of your early progress comes from clearing objectives on hazards you can comfortably handle rather than from pushing difficulty.

Raising the hazard level does not make you stronger. Unlocks do. If you are losing at Hazard 3, dropping to Hazard 2 and completing its challenge earns Biome Points, and those points are the thing that eventually opens Hazard 5.

Your first ten hours, in order

  1. 1

Learn to mine and fight at once

Play Crystalline Caverns on Hazard 1 and deliberately practise drifting toward ore between threats. Watch whether the shop between stages gives you real choices.

  2. 2

    Reach player rank 5

This unlocks the Engineer, which is the gateway to the best general-purpose class mod in the game.

  3. 3

Dive as the Engineer until Engineer rank 9

Class mods come from class rank, not player rank. This is the single most valuable stretch of grinding in the early game because Tinkerer improves every dive afterwards.

  4. 4

Commit to one weapon per dive

Spend shop money pushing one weapon toward levels 6 and 12 so you actually get to choose overclocks, rather than levelling three weapons to nothing.

  5. 5

Farm Biome Points where you are comfortable

Complete the displayed challenge on a hazard you can clear. Points open higher hazards; dying on a higher hazard opens nothing.

The three mistakes that end early dives

Treating mining as optional. It is the most common one, and it is invisible — you do not die from not mining, you die two stages later from the upgrades you could not afford.

Spreading upgrades across weapons. Overclocks at weapon level 6, 12 and 18 are the real power spikes. Three weapons at level 5 have none of them; one weapon at level 12 has two.

Climbing hazard levels for their own sake. The difficulty number is not progression. Biome Points are progression, and you earn those by completing objectives — which is easier on a hazard you are not losing to.

Get those three right and the game opens up quickly. It is generous once you understand that the rock, not the horde, is what you are really managing.

FAQ

FAQ

Both, and if you have to choose, mine. Ore is what you spend in the shop between stages, and those purchases are what make you strong enough for the next stage. Your weapons fire automatically, so time spent moving toward ore is not time spent not fighting — it is the same time doing two jobs. A dive where you ignored the terrain is a dive you underfunded, and you will feel it around stage three.
Player rank 5, for the Engineer. Not because the Engineer's starting mod is special — Maintenance Worker is one of the weaker ones — but because Engineer rank 9 unlocks Tinkerer, whose weapons start at level 3 with plus 10 percent XP. That reaches the overclock breakpoints at weapon level 6, 12 and 18 earlier, which compounds for the rest of every dive you take afterwards.
Five stages for a standard dive. Biome Masteries are the same structure stretched to ten stages, and Weapon Masteries are short three-stage dives where you use a single weapon. If a five-stage dive already feels long, do not jump to a Mastery to get stronger — the shorter loop is where the unlocks are.
Biome Points are the currency that unlocks hazard levels. You earn them by completing the specific challenge shown to you when you choose a hazard level, which means low-hazard runs still progress you as long as you are hitting those objectives. Each hazard tier costs a set amount — Magma Core's Hazard 2 needs 9 points while Hazard 5 needs 39 — so the gap widens sharply toward the top.
Crystalline Caverns, which is unlocked by default and has the least aggressive environment. After that, pick by what you want to deal with rather than by difficulty number: Magma Core has lava vents and plants that explode when you approach, Hollow Bough has damaging vines, Salt Pits drops stalactites on you, Azure Weald has jump pads and healing crystals, and Glacial Strata has ice that changes how your dwarf moves.
Usually because your build was underfunded earlier rather than because stage four is unfair. Enemy pressure rises the whole dive while your upgrades arrive in pieces, so a slow first two stages puts you permanently behind. Check two things: whether you are mining enough to buy upgrades every time the shop appears, and whether you are spreading purchases across several weapons instead of pushing one weapon toward its overclock levels.
