DRG Survivor Weapons — Which Archetype to Commit To, Ranked

DRG Survivor Weapons — Which Archetype to Commit To, Ranked

Author: Verdict Games Editorial Team Last Updated:

The Bottom Line

Build around persistent-area weapons first — ground zones, beams and turret-adjacent effects keep working while you move, which is what a rising horde punishes you for not having. Directional and projectile weapons are the reliable middle. Drones and throwables are real but narrower, and single-target weapons need a class mod behind them. Whichever you pick, feed one weapon to weapon level 12 rather than spreading upgrades, because the overclock breakpoints are where the actual power is.

Summary

Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor has over fifty weapons across five classes, and ranking them individually would be out of date by the next patch. What does not change is the archetype each one belongs to, and how well that archetype holds up as enemy density rises across a five-stage dive. This guide ranks the five archetypes, lists every weapon by class so you can see which bucket yours falls into, and explains why the choice matters less than the commitment.

Who This Is For: Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor players deciding which weapon to build around Intermediate

Key Points

Key Points

1

Persistent-area weapons — ground zones, beams and fire or acid puddles — hold up best as stages get denser because they keep working while you reposition.

2

There are over fifty weapons across five classes, so the archetype matters far more than the individual name.

3

Your class mod often restricts which families you are offered: Weapons Specialist gets all projectile weapons, Demolitionist all explosive, Interrogator all fire and acid.

4

Committing to one weapon to level 12 beats spreading across three, because overclocks land at weapon level 6, 12 and 18.

5

Status-effect weapons are a build decision, not a preference — Interrogator doubles their damage but cuts raw damage by 30 percent.

There are over fifty weapons in Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, which makes a weapon-by-weapon tier list both enormous and obsolete the moment the game is patched. What does not go stale is why certain kinds of weapon hold up as a dive gets harder — so this guide ranks the archetypes, then lists every weapon so you can see which bucket yours sits in.

Which archetype to build around — ranked

The test is simple: enemy density rises across five stages while the correct play is increasingly to keep moving. Does the weapon still work while you are running away?

S
Persistent area — ground zones, sweeping beams, puddles Keeps dealing damage while you reposition, which is exactly what the late stages demand. Dragonstorm Incinerator, CRSPR Flamethrower, Voltaic Field Generator and Toxic Sludge Spreader all work on this principle
A
Directional volume — minigun, autocannon, rapid-fire in a facing High sustained output as long as you control your facing. Lead Storm, Thunderhead and Warthog hold a lane rather than a point, which scales well with density Explosive area — grenades and launchers Area damage is the answer to being surrounded, and the Demolitionist mod adds plus 20% explosion radius on top. Deepcore PGL and Plasma Burster are the archetypes
B
Drones and constructs They work without your attention, which is genuinely valuable, but they anchor or lag behind. Strong with Maintenance Worker or Operator supporting them, ordinary without Throwables and returning weapons Impact Axe, Voltaic Stun Sweeper and Springloaded Ripper cover ground on the way out and back. Reliable, but the damage arrives on a delay you do not control
C
Single-target precision M1000 Classic and Bulldog hit hard in one place. Excellent with Sharp Shooter's crit bonus behind them, underwhelming when twenty enemies arrive at once

If you want one rule: take something that leaves damage on the ground behind you. Everything else in this ranking is a variation on how much the weapon needs you to be facing the right way.

This ranks archetypes, not individual weapons. Balance passes move specific guns around; they do not change the fact that a ground zone keeps working while you run and a single-target shot does not.

Every weapon by class

Scout Deepcore GK2, M1000 Classic, Zhukov NUK17, Jury-Rigged Boomstick, Drak-25 Plasma Carbine, Nishanka Boltshark X-80, TH-0R Bug Taser, Voltaic Stun Sweeper, Arc-Tek Cryo Guard, Cryo Grenade
Gunner "Lead Storm" Powered Minigun, "Thunderhead" Heavy Autocannon, "Bulldog" Heavy Revolver, BRT7 Burst Fire Gun, ArmsKore Coil Gun, "Hurricane" Guided Rocket System, Seismic Repulsor, Firefly Hunter Drone, Tactical Leadburster, Incendiary Grenade
Engineer LMG Gun Platform, "Warthog" Auto 210, Deepcore PGL, "Stubby" Voltaic SMG, LOK-1 Smart Rifle, Breach Cutter, Shard Diffractor, Plasma Burster, Voltaic Shock Fence, Hi-Volt Thunderbird, Shredder Swarm Grenade

Your class mod decides part of this before you dive

Several class mods restrict or steer which weapon families you are offered, which means the weapon decision starts on the loadout screen rather than mid-dive.

Class mod What it gives you access to What that implies
Weapons Specialist All projectile weapons Broad directional-volume access — the flexible default
Demolitionist All explosive weapons, +20% explosion radius Commits you to the explosive-area archetype, and makes it better than it is for anyone else
Interrogator All fire and acid weapons, +100% status damage, -30% damage Commits you to persistent-area status weapons. Outside them you are simply playing at 70% damage
Strong Armed Throwables, +20% weapon range Commits you to the throwable archetype, which sits mid-table on its own
Maintenance Worker / Operator Construct and drone support Makes the B-tier drone archetype genuinely viable rather than merely playable

The class mods tier list covers the full ranking, but the short version for weapons is that Interrogator and Demolitionist are declarations, not bonuses. Pick them knowing what you will be shooting for the next five stages.

Why commitment beats choice

This is the part that matters more than any ranking above.

Overclocks land at weapon level 6, 12 and 18, and they are the real power spikes — the level 18 Unstable options change how a weapon behaves. Weapon levels come from putting shop money and upgrades into that specific weapon.

So the arithmetic is unforgiving. Spread your spending across three weapons in a five-stage dive and you may finish with three weapons around level 5, holding zero overclocks. Put the same money into one and you finish around level 12, holding two.

Picking up a better weapon mid-dive resets you to the bottom of that weapon's level track. At stage two this usually means arriving at stage five with nothing. The Tinkerer class mod is the exception, since its weapons start at level 3.

The practical consequence is that the archetype ranking above is a tiebreaker, not a mandate. A committed C-tier weapon at level 12 with two overclocks will outperform an S-tier weapon at level 5 every time. Pick from the top of the list when the game gives you the choice, then stop choosing.

Bringing it together

Take something that leaves damage behind you as you move, because that is what a rising horde punishes you for lacking. Take directional volume or explosive area as the reliable alternative. Treat drones, throwables and single-target weapons as choices that want a class mod supporting them.

Then, whichever you took, feed it. The overclock guide covers what to pick at each breakpoint — but you only get to make those choices if you stopped spreading your money first.

FAQ

FAQ

The more useful answer is the best archetype, because individual weapons get rebalanced and the archetype logic does not. Persistent-area weapons — anything that leaves a ground zone, sweeps a beam, or drops fire and acid puddles — hold up best, because they keep dealing damage while you are moving away from danger. In a game where the correct play is almost always to reposition, a weapon that only fires where you are aiming loses value exactly when the stage gets hard.
Over fifty across the five classes, with roughly ten to eleven each for Scout, Gunner, Engineer, Driller and Demolisher. That is why this guide sorts them into archetypes rather than listing them from best to worst — a number-by-number ranking would be stale after the next balance pass, while the reason a ground zone outperforms a single-target shot does not change.
Usually not. Overclocks arrive at weapon levels 6, 12 and 18, and a new weapon starts far behind on that track. Swapping at stage two commonly means reaching stage five with two weapons that never reached level 6, which is zero overclocks. The exception is the Tinkerer class mod, whose weapons start at level 3.
Several do, and it is one of the main reasons to pick a class mod deliberately. Weapons Specialist can equip all projectile weapons, Demolitionist all explosive weapons, Interrogator all fire and acid weapons, and Strong Armed leans into throwables. Those restrictions steer what the game offers you during a dive, so the weapon decision effectively starts before the dive does.
They are excellent with the right class mod and mediocre without one. Interrogator gives plus 100 percent status effect damage at the cost of minus 30 percent damage, which makes fire and acid weapons hit far harder than their listed numbers suggest. Outside that mod they are respectable but not special, and you are better served by an archetype that does not need a multiplier to justify itself.
They work, but they fight the game's basic rhythm. Turrets anchor to where you placed them in a game that constantly asks you to leave that spot, and drones need time to reach targets. The Maintenance Worker and Operator class mods exist to support them, and with those mods they are genuinely playable — without one, you are usually better off with something that moves with you.
