Urtuk: The Desolation Beginner Guide — Survive Your First Runs

Urtuk: The Desolation is brutal early, and most first runs die to the same avoidable mistakes. This beginner guide teaches the survival mindset that keeps your band alive: break armour before health, use terrain hazards as weapons, protect injured survivors, and pick your battles instead of brawling. You will learn how the core systems fit together — armour, health, injuries, mutators and positioning — so that the punishing opening becomes a fair, winnable tactical puzzle rather than a wall.

Urtuk: The Desolation Classes Tier List — Best Units Ranked

Urtuk: The Desolation gives you many classes across tank, damage and support roles, and the ones that shine are not always the obvious damage dealers. This tier list ranks the key classes by how much they carry a brutal, terrain-driven, attrition-heavy campaign. You will learn why displacement and sustain sit at the top, which damage dealers earn their fragility, and how to build a balanced band that survives the early game rather than one that simply hits hard.

Urtuk: The Desolation Combat Guide — Terrain, Turn Order & Tactics

Combat is where Urtuk: The Desolation lives or dies, and it rewards tactics over force. This guide goes deep on the systems that decide battles: using terrain hazards and displacement as weapons, manipulating turn order to act first, flanking for automatic critical hits, and managing the armour-then-health flow. You will learn how to read a battlefield, set up displacement combos, protect your fragile units, and win fights cleanly enough to survive Urtuk's relentless attrition and permadeath.

Urtuk: The Desolation Mutators Guide — Build Your Party Right

Mutators are Urtuk: The Desolation's signature progression system — powers harvested from defeated enemies that replace skill trees. They make your party uniquely yours, but each usually costs maximum health, so building well balances power against survivability. This guide explains how mutator extraction works, how affinity lowers the health penalty over time, how traits unlock, and how to assign mutators across your band so your fighters grow stronger without becoming too fragile.

What's the Game?

Urtuk is an open world, tactical turn-based RPG in a low-fantasy setting. Guide your band of adventurers through the ruins of an ancient world. Recruit new followers, loot the corpses of your fallen foes, and do your best to survive in this harsh and unforgiving realm.

Terrain is a weapon

— Push, pull and throw enemies into spiked pits, off ledges and onto hazards; positioning beats raw damage.

Mutators, not skill trees

— Extract powers from defeated foes, usually trading maximum health for strength, to make each character your own.

Brutal attrition

— Limited healing, lasting injuries and permadeath make every battle a careful, tense decision.

Tactical depth

— Turn-order play, flanking for automatic crits and an armour-then-health system reward smart, deliberate combat.

Distinctive and grim

— A hand-drawn grimdark look and unrelentingly bleak tone give it a strong identity.

Great value

— A complete, fully released game with high replayability and no microtransactions.

FAQ

FAQ

A single-player turn-based tactical RPG from solo developer David Kaleta, set in a grim, hand-drawn dark-fantasy world. You lead a small band of survivors across a procedural overworld, fighting grid battles where terrain hazards and positioning matter enormously, and you grow your party by extracting mutators from defeated enemies rather than using skill trees.
It was built largely by solo developer David Kaleta. It fully released on Steam on 27 February 2021 after about a year in Early Access, and holds a Very Positive rating. It is a complete, one-time purchase with no microtransactions.
It is a deliberately brutal tactics game with limited healing, lasting injuries and permadeath, so early mistakes are punished and first runs often end badly while you learn. The key is to treat terrain as a weapon, break enemy armour before chasing health damage, and protect your weakest survivors rather than fighting recklessly.
Characters gain experience and raise four base stats on level-up, but their real power comes from mutators — modifications harvested from defeated foes that grant strong effects, usually at the cost of maximum health. Used long enough, a character develops an affinity that reduces that penalty. Traits also unlock by repeating specific battle actions.
The Steam store officially supports English, Russian, Polish, French and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional). There is no official Japanese, Korean, German, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian localization, and the game has a fair amount of text, so players in those languages should weigh the language barrier before buying.
