The Early-Game Picture
Hollow Knight is famously light on guidance, so the early game is about building your map, building your character, and then choosing your battles. Don't force bosses — widen the world first.
-
1
Buy maps from Cornifer
Each area hides Cornifer the mapmaker — buy his map to stop getting lost.
-
2
Collect Charms and notches
Strengthen yourself with trinkets and slot capacity before challenging tough bosses.
-
3
Learn Focus healing
Spend Soul earned from attacks to heal — practice the safe timing windows early.
-
4
Expand your reach
New abilities open new paths. If stuck, change direction and explore elsewhere.
Owning the map is the single biggest early-game upgrade. After buying it from Cornifer, sit at a bench to update it — your current location and unexplored corridors become visible, ending most of the "where am I" frustration.
Upgrade Priorities
| Element | Effect | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Charms (trinkets) | Buff attack, healing, exploration | High (collect first) |
| Notches (Charm slots) | Equip more Charms at once | High |
| Nail upgrades | More melee damage | Medium |
| Soul Vessels | More Focus heals and spells | Medium |
If a boss keeps killing you, walk away and explore. A new ability or Charm often turns the same boss into a quick win. Detours aren't time wasted — they're how progression actually works.
Focus Healing — The Critical Skill
Hollow Knight heals via Focus, which spends Soul earned from hitting enemies. You're vulnerable during the cast, so only Focus during attack lulls or from a safe distance.
Drill the rhythm early — hit enemies to build Soul, then Focus in a gap. The Quick Focus Charm shortens the cast time and is a massive boss-fight survival upgrade.

★Honest Take: Even the Lost Time Is Fun
Honestly, Hollow Knight will leave you wondering "where now?" more than once. But the magic is exactly in those wanderings — finding a hidden passage or a new Charm and watching the world stitch together is a uniquely beautiful payoff. Get the map early, then take detours freely. That's how this game wants to be played.
