Conclusion — survival first, then damage and economy
The fastest way to stabilize your runs in Hades is the upgrade order of the permanent Mirror of Night. In short — lock in survival (Death Defiance, then Greater Reflex, then Thick Skin) first, then branch into damage and economy. Do not force Heat up; raise it gradually, weapon by weapon, only as far as you can still clear.
When in doubt, prioritize Death Defiance. An extra life that revives you at half health is the most reliable fix for the early "so close to clearing" runs.
How the Mirror works (red/green and currencies)
The Mirror of Night is a permanent upgrade that ranks up each talent with Darkness. Every talent has a red and a green version with different directions. Chthonic Keys unlock new tiers, and if you have paid Darkness into both versions you can swap freely without a Key.
| Currency | Role | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Darkness | Main currency that ranks up talents | Chests, kills, room rewards during a run |
| Chthonic Key | Unlocks a new Mirror tier (talent) | Key rooms and rewards during a run |
Mirror unlock priority
Early on, prioritize talents that directly raise survivability. Branch into damage and economy only once you can clear consistently — that keeps Darkness from being wasted.
Red and green can be swapped at any time. For example, Death Defiance (revive) and Stubborn Defiance (revive once per chamber) share the same slot. Swapping to match your weapon and build widens your options on the same Mirror.
Heat and the Pact of Punishment
Heat is the total difficulty you apply through the Pact of Punishment, unlocked after your first clear. Each condition strengthens enemies, but in return you earn per-weapon bounties on clear — Titan Blood, Ambrosia, Diamonds, and more. Bounties progress per weapon, so a high-Heat clear with one weapon does not affect another weapon's bounties.
-
1
Start at 1–2 Heat
Apply only one or two light, predictable conditions and keep the run clearable.
-
2
Push slowly per weapon
Bounties are per weapon. Raise Heat one step at a time on your best weapon and clear out its bounties.
-
3
Materials mostly done at 20 Heat
The main bounties run out around 20 Heat. Beyond that, treat it as a skill challenge.
Pros
- +Steady upgrade materials (bounties) on every clear
- +You choose the conditions, so you tune the difficulty yourself
- +Per-weapon progress makes farming easy on your best weapon
Cons
- −Overstacking makes runs suddenly unclearable
- −Almost no material rewards past 20 Heat
For beginners — choosing light conditions
For your first Heat, use just one or two conditions whose effects are easy to read. Lasting Consequences (less healing) and Convenience Fee (pricier shops) do not break combat itself and are easy, low-Heat entry points. Conditions that directly raise combat difficulty — more enemies or time limits — are better added once your build is stable.

★My honest verdict — the Mirror and Heat are a growth meter
Honestly, the Mirror and Heat in Hades are a brilliant way to make progress and growth feel measurable. Survive with Death Defiance, raise Heat one step, and clear again — these small increments give every run a goal. Overstacking backfires, so lock in survival, then push Heat one step at a time. Patiently clearing every weapon's bounties is, in the end, the fastest route.
